Line Describing a Cone – Zine for Drill Hall – TLC’s manifesto

At the Cone and Bulb event at Drill Hall in September 2025, we created a new zine about Line Describing a Cone, which we distributed to audience-participants.

Here is a scan of the zine.

Among lots of other goodies, the zine contains the TLC’s manifesto. While we have talked around this for more than 20 years, this is the first time we’ve put this idea down very succinctly, under the heading of a manifesto. It’s still not perfect, and this will no doubt continue to evolve. But anyway, here it is:

Our Expanded Cinema Manifesto

We at TLC insist that the best Expanded Cinema happens when an audíence is brought together for a specific space and time as a temporary community. The best Expanded Cinema creates a social event and a memorable communal experience. The celluloid strip that constitutes the artwork’s ‘DNA” remains the same, but as ít travels through time, and is joined by diverse groups of people, in different spaces, it evolves and “belongs” uniquely to the present.
